How many sets to win darts? In the World Championship final, the answer is 7 sets, played as the best of 13. In the semi-finals it is 6 sets, and in the first two rounds a player only needs 3. There is no single number, because the sets needed to win a darts match change with the tournament and the round. That is why you hear "first to 3" one night and "first to 7" a few days later.

This guide gives you the exact numbers for every stage of the PDC World Championship and the World Grand Prix, explains the deciding-set rule where 3 legs is suddenly not enough, and covers the tournaments that skip sets completely. There is also an interactive explorer so you can check any round in seconds while you watch.

The Quick Answer: Sets to Win by Round

Most people asking this question are watching the PDC World Championship at Alexandra Palace, so here is that tournament first. Every match uses set play, every set is the best of 5 legs (first to 3 legs), and the number of sets needed grows round by round:

RoundFormatSets to winMax legs
First & second roundBest of 5 sets325
Third & fourth roundBest of 7 sets435
Quarter-finalsBest of 9 sets545
Semi-finalsBest of 11 sets655
FinalBest of 13 sets765

So if you are watching tonight and wondering how many sets win the match, find the round in that table. A first-round match can be over in 9 legs. The final can stretch past three hours and 60 legs. Same tournament, very different endurance test.

How Set Play Works: Legs, Sets, Match

Darts matches are built from three layers. Understanding them makes every scoreboard instantly readable:

  • Leg: one single game of 501. Both players count down from 501 and must finish on a double. This is the smallest unit of the match. If you want a refresher, here is why darts starts at 501.
  • Set: a short race of legs. In nearly every professional set-play event, a set is the best of 5 legs, so the first player to win 3 legs takes the set. We covered the details in how many legs are in a set of darts.
  • Match: a race of sets. The first player to reach the target number of sets wins the match. That target is what this article is about.

A useful comparison is tennis. Points make games, games make sets, sets make the match. In darts, legs play the role of games. According to Wikipedia's overview of set play, the best-of-5-legs set has been the standard since the first World Championship in 1978, with only a few exceptions along the way.

How Many Sets to Win the World Darts Championship?

The World Championship expanded to 128 players in the 2025/26 edition, and the format now steps up in five stages. Every set on the Ally Pally stage is the best of 5 legs. Full match rules are published by the Professional Darts Corporation, but here is the plain-English version.

First and Second Round: First to 3 Sets

Early-round matches are the best of 5 sets. Win 3 sets and you are through. A dominant player can finish the job in 9 straight legs (3 legs x 3 sets), which is why big favourites sometimes wrap up a first-round match in under 30 minutes.

Third and Fourth Round: First to 4 Sets

From the third round, matches stretch to the best of 7 sets. The extra set rewards consistency: one hot spell is no longer enough to carry a player through, because the opponent has more time to respond.

Quarter-Finals: First to 5 Sets

The quarter-final format is the best of 9 sets. At this stage a match can run to 45 legs, and stamina starts to matter as much as scoring power. Players who burned energy in long early matches often fade here.

Semi-Finals: First to 6 Sets

The semi-finals are the best of 11 sets, so the winner is the first to 6. This is where casual viewers get confused, because "first to 6" also describes a Premier League night, where 6 means legs, not sets. At the Worlds semi-final stage, reaching 6 sets means winning at least 18 legs.

The Final: First to 7 Sets

The World Championship final is the best of 13 sets. The first player to win 7 sets is world champion. As the BBC's guide to the final puts it, not all competitions are the same, but the final of the World Darts Championship is first to win seven sets.

That means a champion must win at least 21 legs in the final alone. Across the whole tournament, the title takes a minimum of well over 100 winning legs. It is the longest format in professional darts, and it is designed that way: over 13 possible sets, luck evens out and the better player almost always wins.

The Deciding Set: When 3 Legs Is Not Enough

In a normal set, first to 3 legs wins it, full stop. But if a World Championship match goes all the way to a deciding set (for example 6-6 in the final), a special rule kicks in: you must win the deciding set by 2 clear legs. Leading 3-2 in legs is not enough; you need 4-2, 5-3, or another two-leg margin.

If the deciding set reaches 5-5 in legs, the match goes to one sudden-death leg. Winner takes everything. The most famous example remains the 2007 PDC final, when Raymond van Barneveld beat Phil Taylor 7-6 in a sudden-death leg after more than three hours of play. One leg of 501 decided a world title.

This tie-break structure answers another common question: darts is not generally "win by two legs". That rule only applies inside a deciding set, as a way to make sure the biggest matches are not settled by the coin-flip advantage of throwing first.

How Many Sets to Win the World Grand Prix?

The World Grand Prix in October is the only other PDC major played in sets, and it adds a twist: every leg is double-in, double-out. You cannot start scoring until you hit a double, and you still need a double to finish.

The set targets are shorter than at the Worlds: first round: first to 2 sets (best of 3), second round: first to 3 sets (best of 5), quarter-finals: first to 4 sets (best of 7), semi-finals: first to 5 sets (best of 9), and the final: first to 6 sets (best of 11). Each set is still the best of 5 legs. That first-round format is brutal: lose two sets and you are on the plane home, which is why seeded players fall there so often.

The revived PDC World Masters has also used set play, but with shorter sets of the best of 3 legs, so a set only needs 2 legs there. It is the exception that proves the best-of-5 rule.

Which Darts Tournaments Do Not Use Sets?

Most professional darts is actually played without sets. These events use a straight race to a number of legs:

  • Premier League: league-night matches are first to 6 legs. No sets at all.
  • World Matchplay: legs only, starting at first to 10 and rising to first to 18 in the final.
  • UK Open, Grand Slam, Players Championship: all legs-only formats, typically first to 6 up to first to 11.

Why the difference? Time. Leg-only matches have a predictable length, which suits TV schedules and floor events where players face several matches per day. Set play produces longer, more dramatic arcs, which is why the PDC saves it for the World Championship and the World Grand Prix. So when someone says "first to 6", check the event: at a Premier League night that is 6 legs and maybe 25 minutes of darts, while in a Worlds semi-final it is 6 sets and can take three hours.

Why Darts Uses Sets at All

Set play borrows the same logic as sets in tennis: it breaks a long match into chapters. Lose a set 3-0 and the damage is capped at one set; you start the next one level. That keeps matches alive longer and creates the comeback stories the World Championship is famous for.

It also changes strategy. Players manage energy across sets, push hard to steal a set against the throw, and treat the first leg of every set as a mini final. For the viewer, every set has its own scoreboard, its own momentum, and its own pressure moments, which is exactly what you want from a three-hour final.

Practice Set Play at Home (and Track It)

Set play is also a great practice format, because it forces you to perform in short bursts and close out tight moments. Play first-to-3-sets matches against a friend, or against yourself with a target average. The pressure of a deciding leg in a deciding set is the closest thing to match nerves you can create alone at home.

Dartsva tracks every leg you throw in the browser: three-dart average, checkout percentage, and doubles accuracy across every session. If you want structure instead of aimless legs, the 30-to-40 average training plan and the weekly darts workout build match-format practice into a repeatable routine, and the Gauntlet assessment shows you which part of your game loses you sets.

Quick Takeaways

  • There is no fixed number of sets to win darts; it depends on the tournament and the round.
  • World Championship: first to 3 sets in rounds one and two, first to 4 in rounds three and four, first to 5 in the quarter-finals, first to 6 in the semi-finals, and first to 7 sets in the final (best of 13).
  • A set is almost always the best of 5 legs, so 3 legs win a set.
  • In a deciding set at the Worlds you must win by 2 clear legs, with a sudden-death leg at 5-5.
  • The World Grand Prix is the only other PDC major with sets; its final is first to 6 sets.
  • The Premier League, World Matchplay, and most other events use legs only, so "first to 6" there means legs.
